2023 BUTTERFIELD SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

Butterfield has awarded its annual scholarships to five promising students, including two talented Caymanians, Nicocia Jones and Aerin Ewing-Chow, who will receive a combined $55,000 between them for the upcoming academic year. These scholarships can be maintained for up to four academic years.

Nicocia Jones has been awarded the Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship which grants her $30,000 per year towards her studies in Information Systems at the Florida Institute of Technology. A graduate of the University College Cayman Islands, she plans to become a cybersecurity professional. Outside of her studies, Ms Jones plays sports, including netball, and music. She has contributed to Rotary and volunteers with a local arts organisation.

Aerin Ewing-Chow received the Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship for Employees’ Children (Caribbean), one of three regional scholarships available to Butterfield employees who are parents or guardians of a student pursuing post-secondary education. She has been awarded $25,000 per academic year towards her studies in English and Psychology at Queen’s University in Canada, as part of her desire to become a psychologist. Ms Ewing-Chow is a passionate writer and has won a number of writing competitions, including the Barbados National Cultural Foundation Award, Commonwealth Short Story Award and the Cayman Junior Writing Award. She has volunteered with Loop Cayman, helping to write mental health content for teenagers.

Michael McWatt, Butterfield’s Managing Director, Cayman, said: “Congratulations to Nicocia and Aerin from all of us at Butterfield. Both of these women have set themselves apart as exceptional students and valuable members of our community. We are proud to be able to play a part in supporting their future and look forward to following their successes.

“Education is an important factor for economic growth, which is why Butterfield has invested almost $2.5 million in scholarships since 2018. We hope to empower the next generation to pursue their academic ambitions and pave the way for their bright careers. In addition to our annual scholarship programme, we are pleased to provide a range of other opportunities for young people, from summer internships to our graduate talent programme.”

The scholarship programme offers financial assistance to a number of promising students each year based on academic excellence, community involvement and sporting attainments, financial need and a candidate’s demonstrated ability to lead.

Applications for the 2024 scholarship programme will open later in the year. For more information on scholarships, internships and other educational and career opportunities, please visit www.butterfieldgroup.com
