A glorious Sunset

Sunset House was the very first place we stayed at when we first arrived on island, 24 years ago, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. The ocean front Friday night watering hole for many people prior to the advent of Camana Bay, My Bar’s expansive outdoors deck at Sunset House welcomes all to enjoy well priced beers, great food, perhaps a game or two of dominoes and always the promise of a magnificent sunset.

It has been a regular “go-to” for us when we have guests, as they always marvel at the sheer beauty of the sunsets there, as well as if we are just in the mood for a relaxed meal, normally with the kids in tow.

Their bar menu has been a regular fixture in our lives for quite some time and I would always recommend the bacon cheeseburger and fries, the quesadillas, the chicken wings with hot sauce, the fish tacos and the chicken, shrimp or dolphin (mahi mahi) wraps. But the real draw for us is the seriously good Indian food.

As curry-loving Brits, we know a thing or two about curries and My Bar at Sunset House and their main restaurant (called Seaharvest) do some of the best on island. In fact, they have an entire menu dedicated to Indian food, which is always a good sign in our books. The kids have been practically brought up on Sunset House’s chicken tikka masala (mild, though you can choose medium and hot if you dare), while we always enjoy the lamb dishes as well as the biryanis.

This time we chose a shrimp biryani (which isn’t actually on the menu, but I always ask for it) which was redolent with proper biryani spices of saffron, cumin, coriander and maybe a hint of cardamom, along with lots of lovely mint to flavour the dish even more and, of course, juicy big shrimp. We also chose the lamb rogan josh and tried the hot version for once (we usually err on the side of caution with a medium). While the heat levels were certainly ramped up a few Scoville, the heat did not detract from the deliciousness of the dish and just gave you a sensation of wanting more. Their curries also come with a nice and refreshing salad of tomatoes, cucumber and onion and some crunchy poppadoms; you ought to order the naan bread as well, as it is seriously good. For some reason I always like to wash a Sunset curry down with a good old fashioned gin and tonic. Nothing else will do.

Fish tacos were also on the agenda this evening and were literally tumbling out of their shells with crispy fried fish and fresh veggies, encased in a crunchy shell.

And the sunset? It was a gorgeous as ever!
