A MEMORABLE CAREER

Everyone at the Aston Rutty Center on Friday 23rd April, stood and gave a rousing reception to retiring District Commissioner Mr. Ernie Scott, as he entered the auditorium. As he waved to all present, he proceeded to mingle with the large crowd that turned out to witness this memorable occasion. Incoming District Commissioner, Mr. Mark Tibbetts got the event underway around 4:30 p.m. as he welcomed the gathering and invited Pastor Audley Scott, himself a past District Commissioner to lead in prayer. Attendees then proceeded to partake of refreshments, after which the various speakers gave their remarks.

Deputy Governor, Hon. Mr. Franz Manderson led the battery of speakers bringing remarks. He commenced by telling the audience there are not many who have served in public service for this length of time. He praised Mr. Ernie as a calm, cool and collected individual who has always been dependable and reliable. “Your desire for the best for the sister islands always impressed me. Your astute leadership after Paloma hit the Brac, and your attention given to Cubans who end up on the Brac shores periodically are also admirable. My family and I wish you continued blessings,” he concluded.

Following Mr. Manderson’s remarks, re-elected member for Cayman Brac East and Minister for Education, Hon. Mrs. Julianna O’Connor Connolly gave her remarks. She recalled the time when Mr. Ernie suggested the establishment of a Day Care which has become a reality. She praised him for his excellent and dedicated service to the islands and prayed God’s blessings upon him.” She concluded by saying, “Keep on singing Ernie,” to loud applause from the audience.

For his part re-elected MLA for Cayman Brac East and Little Cayman, Hon. Mr. Moses Kirkconnell praised Ernie as one with exceptional talent and ability to get things done. “I have never seen Ernie get ruffled by any circumstance. He is always willing to work for the betterment of the citizens of the islands. Enjoy your retirement,” he concluded again to loud applause.

The audience also heard remarks from Strand Bodden, Chief Officer in the Ministry of District Administration and former D.C. Mr. Kenny Ryan. A recorded message of congratulations from the Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Martyn Roper was played for the audience. Mr. Erie then took to the podium to a standing ovation.

“I can recall 47 years ago when I visited the then D.C. for a job. There was nothing to sign, no oath of office or anything. The D.C. told me that he did not know me that much but my parents whom he knew affectionately were outstanding citizens. If you are serious about working then show up at 8: 30 Monday morning. I was there much earlier than that. The rest is history. The job over these past 47 years was not all smooth sailing but I would do it again. (loud cheering). Let me praise the deceased, Eston Scott for his guidance and training in performing my duties. When I became District Commissioner I never let the position get to my head. I remained a community person as I enjoyed interacting with everyone. My family and I have had some rough times along the way, but praise be to God for seeing us through them all. My greatest memories of these last 47 years was getting the islands back from Paloma’s destruction and hosting the Queen’s 3 sons, Edward, Andrew and Charles. Thanks to all of for making my career memorable, God bless you all,” he concluded. The event concluded around 6:30 p.m.
