Al fresco breakfast on West Bay Road

By Lindsey Turnbull

There is a reason why Coconut Joe’s on the West Bay Road is always packed at breakfast time and that is because they do fantastic breakfasts! A longtime favourite of ours, especially when we have friends and family visiting who long for outdoor dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner (unable to do so in their own chilly climate back home), Coconut Joe’s satisfies that empty stomach first thing with a really excellent breakfast menu.

The ambiance at Coconut Joe’s is very casual. It’s a favourite spot with visitors staying at the Comfort Suites, just over the road, as well as passing tourists and local residents who know they will always get a great, well-priced breakfast here. Sitting under the shades, among the lush foliage, you can easily forget that you are on a busy thoroughfare. The staff are exceptionally pleasant and accommodating and, at breakfast time, especially, most importantly of all, they are quick!

On this Sunday morning occasion, as this was the weekend of Pirate’s Week in Cayman, I was tempted by the Pirate’s Breakfast, that is two eggs any style, two buttermilk pancakes, American bacon, sausage, ham and Joe’s home fries; however, conscious of the extra inches that would immediately pop up on the waistline, I was encouraged to opt for a slightly leaner version – the All American breakfast of two eggs (mine were scrambled), American bacon (nice and crisp – there’s nothing worse than soggy bacon), Joe’s home fries (I could eat a plate of these delicious fried potatoes alone) and toast. This has to be one of the best value breakfasts around, at only CI$7.

My dining companion opted for another well priced option - the Joe’s Breakfast Muffin, also priced at CI$7 and featuring an English muffin with a fried egg, cheese, sausage and Joe’s home fries. Golden waffles also made an appearance on our table, a hearty sized portion of fresh and crispy waffles, complete with a good drizzling of Hershey’s Chocolate sauce, although you could choose blueberries as well.

Omelettes are another great breakfast choice at Coconut Joe’s because they have a really great selection of fillings, including spinach and onion, bacon and cheddar and Spanish (to which you can add salsa also).

There’s also the Monkey Pancakes choice, always a favourite with our kids when they were little, with three good sized pancakes (take one home for later!), and served with a choice of toasted coconut, bananas, blueberries, chocolate chips (our kids topping of choice, always), or peanut butter chips.

A cool and refreshing coconut water served inside a freshly cut coconut and a good couple of rounds of freshly served coffee (served with a little teapot of milk, rather than creamer) sealed the deal for us.
