Summer vacation is almost over, much to the relief of many parents. It’s time to get the kids back into the school routine but don’t wait for the day before school begins to do so. It is recommended that parents start the process at least two weeks before. Here are a few tips to get that school routine going.
1) Get your child back into a regular sleep pattern by waking him/her up 10 – 30 minutes earlier each day. Starting a consistent bedtime and setting that alarm to an earlier time should reset the sleep pattern.
2) Get back to healthy eating. You may have skipped the routine of healthy, on time meals or allowed your child to have extra chips, sweets and other fun foods that are not necessarily healthy, during the summer. Studies show that children who eat a nutritious breakfast can function better during the school day.
3) Wean them off the electronic devices. If your child has been on their iPad/tablet/phone/play station for long hours during the summer, start limiting the hours of daily use.
4) Shift your child’s brain back to “academic” mode. Many children have not done any reading or number work for almost two months! Encourage them to read at least 30 minutes to one hour daily depending on their age. There are free worksheet downloads on the internet for tables and other numeracy practice
Both parents and children are most probably starting to feel a bit anxious about returning to school. The anxiety can be reduced by planning and setting up manageable routines.
