Backyard farming key to Brac’s Agricultural Show

Cayman Brac residents got to enjoy another great Agricultural Show last Saturday, held at the Agricultural Grounds on the Bluff.

From as early as 5:30 in the morning, residents and visitors began assembling at the venue, taking advantage of the early morning cool weather which turned humid as the day went on.

As with previous Agricultural Shows, this year’s event highlighted a variety of talent and efforts of the residents of the Brac when it comes to food production and self-sufficiency. Backyard gardening was a stand-out this year, as more residents have been involved in this aspect of agriculture than has been the case in past years. A good deal more young people were also visibly involved in the variety of different booths and displays.

Apart from the display of different types of ground provisions, green, leafy vegetables, fruits and other healthy vegetables, there were also many booths displaying the arts and crafts indigenous to the Caymanian people. Seeing the older folks deeply involved in their knitting, crocheting and weaving was something that won the hearts of many, especially visitors to the island. A number of these items were bought by them as tokens for their return to their home.

Before the Minister’s address, Brian Crichlow, Ag. Director, Department of Agriculture, addressed attendants by giving an update on the department’s future plans when it comes to food security in the islands.

In his address, The Minister for Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport and Development, Jay Ebanks, expressed his delight at what he had seen at the event. He commended all the farmers and others involved in agriculture and asked them to stay the course, and not waver in their determination to play their part in putting food production at the forefront of these trying times. Local foods, fruits and drinks were also on sale and attracted a large participation by all present.

The local Cadet Core also made a presentation that captured the hearts of the attendants, as was the viewing of the Security Helicopter, with which children enjoyed having pictures taken. The grand event concluded around 4:30pm in the afternoon.
