Bermuda is basking in Olympic glory after Flora Duffy became the first athlete in the country’s history to win an Olympic gold medal.
In her fourth Olympics appearance, Duffy clocked one hour 55 minutes 36 seconds to come out first of the 56 women who competed in the event.
"I think the whole of Bermuda is going crazy. That's what makes it so special to me is that, yes, this was my dream, but I also knew it was bigger than me," the star athlete exclaimed.
"I'm just proud I could be Bermuda's first gold medallist, first female medallist, and hopefully inspire everyone back home that this is possible."
Premier David Burt commented: “Words almost cannot do justice to such an incredible effort from an incredible athlete. This remarkable achievement is a true testament to Flora’s unwavering commitment and genuine perseverance in training and preparation. Bermuda is bursting with pride and admiration for this humble champion.”
Bermuda already has the record for being the least populated country to win a summer Olympic medal when boxer Clarence Hill won bronze in 1976.
