Starting this weekend Bermuda begins what Health Minister Kim Wilson calls “slowly and cautiously opening”.
The territory’s previous plans to open up its borders were thrown off-balance with a huge spike in COVID-19 cases in March and April.
“We are seeing light at the end of this tunnel,” Min. Wilson said, but advised that “it is critical that all public health guidelines remain to be followed.”
After the surge in cases linked to arriving travellers from the UK and the US, Bermuda’s COVID country status was ranked as a community transmission based on the World Health Organisation’s pandemic monitoring system.
Earlier this week there were 19 active cases reported.
With restrictions now being eased on public gatherings and business activities, Bermuda is also intensifying its vaccination program.
Government status show that over half of the adult population have had their COVID-19 jab with 52 per cent completing the two-dose course and 58 per cent having their first shot.
