The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is urging North Side and East End residents as well as those living in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman to get their bulk waste ready for collection as its solid waste team moves to their communities from Monday, May 22, 2023.
“This is the final week of our schedule for the collection of bulk waste this year. We will be servicing the North Side, East End and the sister islands simultaneously to complete the programme which for the first time is taking place ahead of the hurricane season. We want to reduce the amount of debris that could be generated by any form of severe weather”, explained DEH Director, Richard Simms.
North Side, East End and the sister islands residents are urged to prepare, separate and get their items ready for collection. Any bulk waste that is put out after the announced dates will not be collected as there will not be any extension of the schedule.
The Department is also reminding Bodden Town residents that Saturday, May 20, 2023, is the last day for the collection of bulk waste in their area and no further extension will be granted.
Household appliances, furniture, and other items too large to be handled by the weekly DEH collection crews should be placed by the roadside for easy access by the DEH collection crews. Metals and vegetation should also be separated from other bulk items.
Residents are reminded that for any construction and demolition debris, hazardous material, electronics, and tyres, persons are required to make alternative arrangements to transport these materials to the nearest landfill as these items will not be collected during the bulk waste removal activity.
Solid Waste Management crews are deployed from Monday to Saturday according to the remaining schedule:
In Grand Cayman:
• North Side / East End May 22-27
In Cayman Brac:
• East Side & East Bluff May 22-23
• West Side & West Bluff May 24-25
• South Side May 26
In Little Cayman:
• All locations May 24
During this clean-up exercise, the collection of residential waste continues as scheduled. However, garbage should be stored in sturdy containers prior to its collection and properly place in their respective enclosures.
The George Town Landfill operates from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, until 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays. The landfill drop-off facility at the gate will remain accessible to the public and small vehicles 24 hours per day.
