The health authorities in the British Virgin Islands are urging resident to come forward to get their COVID-19 vaccine.
The territory’s Health Minister Carvin Malone says the government is concerned about the low rate of vaccination, especially among BVI nationals.
“Our local population have been rather hesitant and only a small percentage have agreed and have been vaccinated,” he told sitting of the BVI House of Assembly.
The BVI is receiving a total consignment of 32,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from the British government with respective batches expiring at the end of May and June respectively.
Mr Malone emphasised the importance of residents, especially nationals, getting vaccinated to curb the spread of the virus, emphasising that it’s also critical to the plans to reopen the economy.
Equally important he reminded, is ensuring that the vaccines are administered before their expiry date to prevent wastage, especially at a time when some countries - including the UK - have been caught up in a wrangle over international vaccine supplies with ‘vaccine nationalism’ now entering the political lexicon.
