At 4 pm local time TS Ida was located about 130 miles SE of Grand Cayman moving NW at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.
According to the NHC, on the forecast track, the centre of TS Ida will pass near or over the Cayman Islands tonight. Steady strengthening is forecast during the next few days.
Ida, the ninth-named storm of the 2021 Atlantic season, which meteorologists have been monitoring since early this week when it was a disorganized cluster of showers and thunderstorms, strengthened quickly on Thursday after it was designated Tropical Depression Nine by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) just before noon.
Tropical Storm conditions are expected in portions of the Cayman Islands tonight and over portions of Western Cuba tomorrow.
As of 5pm today, Thursday 26 August, two more shelters have opened which brings the total number of available shelters to five:
Aston Rutty Civic Centre in Cayman Brac
Public Works Building in Little Cayman
Sir John A. Cumber Primary School Hall in West Bay (EMC)
Red Cross Building in George Town
Clifton Hunter High School (EMC) (Pet Friendly) in North Side
Every shelteree must be registered when they enter the shelter to ensure that everyone is accounted for within the shelter. The shelter management team may request additional information regarding health, diet, interests and capabilities or skills to assist in the operation of the shelter.
During a storm, shelter residents are expected to remain in the shelter at all times. This is for the safety of all residents.
