Member of the Cayman Islands Regiment update the Cayman Islands’ Governor on the Regiment’s fleet of relief vehicles.

The Cayman Islands Regiment (CIR) staged a capability demonstration for various Government agencies and departments on 30th September at the Lions Center in George Town Grand Cayman.
Representatives from the CIR explained that the demo was an opportunity for the other Government Departments and Agencies to gain a practical understanding of what the Regiment is capable of and to engage with the equipment being used.
Several vehicles in the CIR’s fleet were rolled out during the one-hour display, including disaster relief trucks and other armored, all-terrain modes of transport.
“This is not the entire fleet but the 10 vehicles here today are a great example of what we have in our inventory,” noted Cayman Islands Regiment Officer Tyler Lawson.
Members of the Royal Cayman Islands Police, The Cayman Islands Prison Service and the Cayman Islands Fire Service, joined Her Excellency the Governor Jane Owen to look on at the action whilst officers of various ranks within the CIR explained the activity being presented.
Currently, there are 85 persons serving in the CIR, 7 of whom are full-time, while the others are reservists.
“Next year were are hoping to get to 125 personnel for maximum effect.
“In terms of disaster relief, we can assist other agencies such as the police and the Cayman Islands Prison Service in capacity building,” said Mr. Lawson.
He added that it is important for persons to understand why the Regiment exists and how the organisation can serve to enhance Cayman’s response capabilities in many different kinds of challenges and emergency situations.
“As we approached the half-way point in this year’s hurricane season I was very pleased to see how well prepared our Regiment are to support everyone in Cayman should we be affected, stated Her Excellency the Governor Mrs. Jane Owen.
“They are going from strength to strength in building their humanitarian assistance and disaster relief capabilities and are currently benefitting from bespoke training from the UK’s 24 Commando Engineer Regiment”
