Cayman records two more Covid deaths

One of the deaths had already been noted in the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ daily Covid-19 updates and was being newly reported.

Thankfully, cases in Cayman are not following the trend elsewhere in the world and continue to fall. During the week 5 to 12 March there were 205 new cases of Covid-19 reported by Public Health. This was 21 cases less than were reported in the previous week. Officials noted that 1,162 tests were conducted in the second week of March compared to 1,429 tests in the previous week and 2,581 tests the week before that.

Even so, there had been 13 hospital inpatients going through the George Town and Health City hospitals. Of these, fifty percent were vaccinated.

All statistics reported during the second week of March have been adjusted to reflect the new population figure of 69,350, that had been revealed by last year’s Census.

The Ministry also reported that while Covid-19 restrictions had begun to lift around the world, some concern was being raised due to the resurgence in cases in several countries, and lockdowns were being re-introduced in limited areas in China.

The new wave, it said, appeared to be caused by the Omicron variants - both BA.1 and BA.2. For example, the UK, which had already experienced a wave of Omicron BA.1, was now seeing the BA.2 variant leading the more recent surge in cases. The impact on hospital admissions remained low thus far, in the UK, which, the Ministry said was reassuring and most likely linked to the positive effects of vaccination.
