The Cayman Islands Government declared a Tropical Storm Warning for the country at 4 p.m. today (Sunday, 4 October 2020).
Due to the impending weather conditions all Government schools will be closed tomorrow Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th October.
Currently over Jamaica and moving west-north-west at 10 mph, potential Tropical Cyclone 26, is expected to become a tropical storm early tomorrow afternoon (Monday 5th October) as it approaches the Cayman area.
Officials say the Tropical Storm Warning aims to give local interests time to prepare for any impact of the storm, whose winds will be around 40 m.p.h.
Members of the National Hazard Management Council (NHMC) led by Deputy Governor Franz Manderson are meeting this afternoon to plan Government’s response to the severe weather and its potential impact.
Further updates are expected following the meeting.
The US National Hurricane Centre is reporting that this system has a high chance of development within the next 48 hours.
“Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for additional development, and a tropical depression is likely to form within the next day or two,” it said in an advisory on Sunday afternoon.
Locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds will be possible across the Cayman Islands, portions of Hispaniola, Jamaica and Cuba during the next few days.
“Interests on those islands should monitor the progress of this disturbance. This system has a high chance of development within the next 48 hours,” the USHRC advises.
The system should move west-north-westward at 10 to 15 kt across the central and western Caribbean Sea today through Tuesday, and then move into the southern or south-eastern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
