Saturday 7th August marked another staging of the Caymas Cayman Carnival street parade in Grand Cayman.
Revellers took to the streets, marching from George Town to the Public Beach in West Bay for the event, before descending on Coral Beach, next to Royal Palms on the Seven Mile Beach for the finale.
The event was the second street parade to take place in as many weeks, after the ‘Pride’ Parade, which celebrated LGBTQ inclusiveness took place last week.
This year’s Caymas featured over 1300 participants, in addition to onlookers/spectators, as well as marshals; who were comprised mostly of the Royal Cayman Islands Police to preside over the marchers and enforce strict Covid-19 protocols.
Only those with proof of vaccine were allowed to participate, with onlookers only able to ogle at the parade from a distance.
Braving temperatures in the 90’s was no small feat for many of the participants of the event, who were residents living on work permit in Cayman from overseas.
Organizers of the event worked tirelessly during the week to prepare the costumes for pick-up at the Palmar Hotel (formerly Margaritaville), with the event’s chief, Craig Frederick at the helm.
“This is 15 years for the Swanky Band” now though the Cayman Carnival is still fairly new” he noted, adding that this year was one of the most difficult ever to pull off because of the Covid restrictions and guidelines that had to be adhered to.
