The Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the PACT administration have initiated a series of ministerial-level meetings to address a range of current matters of concern to the business sector and the wider community.
A statement from the Chamber has described the sessions as “very cordial” with a commitment by both sides to “meet regularly to address the issues that were raised”.
It said to date they’ve discussed a range of business-related topics with the objective of establishing closer working relationships.
Since the start of this year, the Chamber Council has held meetings with the Hon. Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance and Labour Chris Saunders, Hon. Minister of Financial Services & Commerce Andre Ebanks, Hon. Minister of Health & Wellness Sabrina Turner, Hon. Minister of Tourism and Transport Kenneth and Hon. Minister of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, and Infrastructure Jay Ebanks.
Detailing the specific outcomes from these sessions so far, the Chamber reported that topics that their discussions with Deputy Premier Christopher Saunders included the private sector pensions reform, an upcoming minimum wage review, and labour supply challenges that are impacting many member businesses.
Mr Saunders has also agreed to participate in the Chamber’s annual Economic Forum and quarterly meetings have also been confirmed with Commerce Minister Andre Ebanks.
Matters addressed with Minister Jay Ebanks covered planning matters “focusing mainly on the backlog of building control inspections and its impact on the development and construction sectors,” according to the Chamber.
COVID-19-related concerns dominated the meeting with Health Minister Sabrina Turner. The Chamber Council said it received an update on the pandemic response and the plans to revise some of the testing protocols for the reopening of the tourism sector.
“Overall, the meetings were cordial with the Council and the Ministers agreeing to meet regularly to address the issues that were raised,” the Chamber said in its statement.
