Community Notice: Statement on the Release from the Office of the Premier concerning the Civil Partner-ship Law 2020

From Bishop Nicholas Sykes

The Statement issued from the Office of the Premier upon the promotion of the Civil Partnership Law by Governor Martyn Roper was unprecedented in its accusatorial character, giving profound concern to those who, in accordance with the Constitution (s.1(2)), recognise "the distinct history, culture, Christian values and socio-economic framework of the Cayman Islands".

While the strong prayer of Our Lord "Thy Kingdom come; Thy Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven" will indeed be fervently joined, we recognise nowhere in it a desire to form a "theocracy" (whatever that term may precisely mean) or any disrespect for the rule of just law. Such implied accusations are alarming, and they should not form part of the public record.

We request those responsible for the Statement of the Office of the Premier to reconsider its text, to discuss it if desired with relevant parties, and to withdraw it publicly as a gesture of good will and good faith.
