Father’s Day will soon be upon us – on 18th June – and so to help dads across the island celebrate the event, actress, producer and director Wendee Miller is producing a host of fun events that will culminate in a play being staged at the Lion’s Centre.
The weekend begins with a free youth performing arts workshop to be held on Friday 16th June at UCCI’s auditorium, aiming to teach attendees new and elevated levels of improv and performing arts strategies which they can use as a tool to build their craft and talents, Wendee advised.
Wendee is a veteran of the stage, a 2020 Silver Star Awardee for Creativity at the National Arts & Culture Awards, with more than 20 years of local artistic contributions and has recently ventured out to represent the Cayman Islands internationally. She has now returned to continue her ventures in film, television and theatre via her production company, V4C Productions. She has created short films, writing, directing and producing ‘Secrets’ and ‘You Are Enough’. Her next short film soon to be released is ‘The Unexpected Call’, for which she has used and collaborated with local talent and crew.
Her Father’s Day weekend workshop is for government school students, and is a collaboration with the Director of the Department of Education Services, Mark Ray. The workshop will be taught and illustrated by Andrea ‘Delcita’ Wright from Jamaica, a drama teacher and guidance counsellor who is no stranger to the Cayman Islands, having visited many times, entertaining the community with laughter and profound messages in the plays in which she has written, starred and performed.
Ms. Wright will be teaching children social responsibilities and self-awareness, along with character building, skit presentation, auditioning and script reading, to name a few skills.
On Father’s Day, Sunday 18th June, Ms. Wright will grace the stage at the Lion’s Community Centre, with her current production called ‘Delicita in the Ex Baby Motha’, a play about parents having to leave their children to go overseas to work and the barrier and strain between child and parent relationship and the dramas in between.
This is a Father’s Day Edition, so fathers will be able to sit back and enjoy not only the play production, but will have the chance to win free giveaways, courtesy of sponsors who have contributed. Restaurant gift certificates, a 60-minute massage, and a grand prize of a two-night stay at the Westin Resort Grand Cayman are up for winning.
Wendee said: “Covid has affected us all in some way or the other, so to give back to the community, I want to elevate the youth to keep pushing towards their dreams and aspirations, to keep enhancing their talents and to not stop moving forward. I also want to recognise and show appreciation to the men in our community and create a space of laughter, enjoyment and fun; to not think of the hard times for a few hours, laugh and enjoy the evening away.”
