Cruise passengers flock to Grand Cayman

The cruise liner industry loves Grand Cayman. With its paradise setting and its close proximity to Florida, there is every reason why Americans are coming in droves. That’s evident by the number of ships passing through here this week, with seasonal festivities at their peak. It started on Sunday, Christmas Day, with the visit of the Eurodam and Celebrity Summit. Although George Town is a relative small port, up to four cruise ships can anchor at one time. If there are more than four in port, the others remain in the harbour.

After three years of pandemic-affected cruising, this is the first Christmas for passengers to travel, island to island, care free.

On Monday, Boxing day, Caribbean Princess, Disney Dream, Zuiderman and Norwegian Prima. On Tuesday it was Carnival Horizon and Brilliance of the Seas.

Wednesday brings 6,200 more in Carnival Vista, Carnival Paradise and Celebrity Apex and Marella Discovery 2. On Thursday there was Carnival Sunrise and Celebrity Beyond. On Friday it’s the turn of Caribbean Princess, Disney Magic and MS Insignia.

Most passengers are escaping the terrifying wintry conditions of the ‘bomb cyclone’ in the States that has affected 240 million Americans and Canadians, linked to at least 22 deaths. More than 1.5 million people lost power and thousands of flights were cancelled since Thursday.

The vast storm extends more than 2,000 miles (3,200km) from Texas to Quebec. Even Florida was affected with unusually freezing temperatures.

In contrast, cruise passengers in the tens of thousands are flocking to Grand Cayman. Besides touring the island, they can go barefoot in the sand, beach horseback riding, enjoy the best scuba diving and snorkelling, get up close and personal with the stingrays and turtles. They can even go to Hell.
