CUC PFL playoffs begin with exciting quarterfinal action

Sports 01 Dec, 2022 Follow News

Action from the 2022 CUC PFL Under 9 Champions Cup quarterfinals between Sir John A. Cumber Primary (red) and Cayman Prep 9B.

With the splendour of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in full swing, primary school students took to the field this past Saturday, November 26 to play a part in their own version of the world cup – the 2022 CUC Primary Football League (PFL) playoffs.

CUC Girls’ Primary Football League (GPFL):

The playoffs for the Under 11 girls begin next week with the semifinals. Games played this past Saturday marked the final games in the regular season with the top four positions already confirmed. Results included Cayman Prep 2 vs. Triple C 0, Joanna Clarke 0 vs. St. Ignatius Catholic 4 (respect rule) and Prospect Primary 0 vs. Sir John A. Cumber Primary 1. The semifinal schedule sees top seeded Cayman Prep take on Sir John A. Cumber Primary and second seeded Cayman International School play St. Ignatius Catholic.

CUC PFL Under 9 Consolation Cup:

With only four schools participating in this division this year, the semifinals will see Joanna Clarke Primary play Red Bay Primary and George Town Primary play Truth For Youth for places in the final.

CUC PFL Under 9 Champions Cup:

With top seeds Cayman Prep 9A and Cayman International School awaiting the winners in the semifinals, there was no shortage of action in the quarterfinals. Prospect Primary’s supporters were ecstatic as their ‘young heroes’ defeated St. Ignatius Catholic 3-1 in the first quarterfinal. Likewise, Cayman Prep 9B got past a tenacious Sir John A. Cumber Primary outfit 4-0.

Cayman Prep 9Bs win means they will face their schoolmates Cayman Prep 9A in the semis and Prospect Primary will play Cayman International School.

CUC PFL Under 11 Consolation Cup:

What an exciting day for the Under 11s as both quarterfinals were decided by a penalty shootout. Triple C outdid George Town Primary 2-1 in penalties following a very exciting 0-0 regulation and overtime stalemate. Likewise, NorthEast Schools saved their best for last as they scored their final penalty kick to defeat Truth For Youth 1-0 after another 0-0 regulation and overtime game.

Triple C will face Cayman Prep 11B in the first semifinal this coming Saturday and NorthEast Schools take on Theoline L. McCoy Primary.

CUC PFL Under 11 Champions Cup:

For many Under 11 players, this will be the last time they have a chance to bring glory or, in some cases, further glory for their particular primary schools. The quarterfinals showed how much football can bring out the best in players as two of the four quarterfinals were ‘nailbiters’.

Defending Under 11 champions Cayman Prep 11A defeated neighbours St. Ignatius Catholic 4-0 and Cayman Brac could not complete their quarterfinal against Cayman International School due to illness. The remaining two quarterfinals were historic as a vibrant Sir John A. Cumber Primary School overcame Prospect Primary 2-0 and Joanna Clarke Primary needed sudden death penalties and a splendid display from their goalkeeper to get past Red Bay Primary 4-3 in sudden death penalties after both schools could not find the back of the net during regulation time and overtime.

In the semifinals, Cayman International School will play Joanna Clarke Primary and Sir John A. Cumber face defending Under 11 champions Cayman Prep 11A.

The 2022 CUC PFL and GPFL semifinals kick-off this Saturday, December 3 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Annex Field. Visit www.caymanyouthfootball.ky  for the full CUC PFL and GPFL playoff scores and schedules.
