The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) maintains their efforts in creating a greener community and has continued their 2021 public education campaign with a visit to Prospect Primary.
The management and staff at DEH fully support the creed that proper waste disposal habits should start at a young age. This helps to facilitate new purpose in children, motivates them to help save the environment and helps to instill responsibility.
The collections team provided a demonstration of the collections truck and gave the children a hands on lesson in proper disposal.
“It was truly an enjoyable success. Many thanks to Ms Solomon, Ms Pink, Ms Davis-Derril and Mrs Kidd, teachers at Prospect Primary, for being great hosts.
The kids had a great time, especially when the truck was in action. The reception class is currently learning about appropriate garbage disposal and will be moving onto recycling in due course. We look forward to having them tour our recycling facility at that time also. It is best to teach kids from a young age about how they can do their part to protect the environment – we are excited to be a part of their education in this area,” said Michael Haworth, Assistant Director – Solid Waste Management, DEH.
Mr Matthew Read, Principal at Prospect Primary added, “We were really happy the DEH team was so enthusiastic to do this with our students. It has made a great impression and they have already started to show better waste disposal habits.
Good waste management then becomes something they hand down and creates a greener, healthier environment for all to share in.”
DEH provides tips to help teach children eco-friendly ways of waste disposal:
1. Always have garbage bins available. For example, take a small waste basket to the beach when you picnic.
2. Practice waste segregation at home so kids can help learn how to recycle
3. Purchase reusable products
4. Create arts and crafts from recyclable items
5. Put up a compost pit at home
