DEH prepares for Inclement Weather

Due to the severe weather forecast, the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is advising members of the public of changes in the operation of the landfills and the delivery of garbage collection services.

DEH Assistant Director Solid Waste, Mr. Mike Haworth explained that “Whilst no formal storm warning has been issued by the Cayman Islands Government to date, the forecast arrival times will coincide with staff being at work. We have to consider the health and well-being of our staff, therefore Solid Waste operations in the three islands will cease at the end of today and recommence on Wednesday, September 25, 2024”.

There will not be garbage collection on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The suspension of this service will affect the ordinary schedule potentially causing a delay of at least one day. Given the expected disruption of services, members of the public are asked to be patient while the DEH team continues to work hard and remain committed to resuming its regular services.

All landfills will remain closed on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Additionally and with immediate effect, derelict vehicles, scrap metals, or used oil will not be accepted until further notice.

Residents are advised that normal collection and landfill operations are expected to resume on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, subject to further forecasts.

Effective preparedness is critical to limit the potential damage to homes any inclement weather. “Prior preparation can minimize the amount of vegetative and other types of debris left behind. We all have a role to play that requires constant attention and continuous improvement. It is your responsibility as homeowners to ensure that your property is clear from all debris and flying objects”, Mr. Haworth said as he encouraged residents to follow the tips below.

· Cut back all trees and weak branches that make contact with buildings.

· Thin your foliage so the wind can flow freely through branches, decreasing the chance that trees/plants will be uprooted.

· Clean your yard of any items that could become missiles in a storm such as broken lawn furniture, etc.

· For any items that can’t be stored indoors, be sure they are tightly secured

· Tie down trash bin lids so they can’t blow open with strong winds.

· Arrange transportation of your vegetation and construction debris to the landfills, as well as any bulk waste.

Members of the public are also encouraged to use the 24-hour drop-off site at the entrance of the George Town landfill which will remain open to facilitate the disposal of small amounts of waste from residential customers, if necessary.
