Hundreds of Cayman Islands residents converged on Elgin Avenue to join the DG’s (Deputy Goevernor’s) 5K Run on Sunday, 29th September.
In its sixth year, the DG’s Run benefits three lucky charities each year, with this year’s recipients including the Alex Panton foundatin, the Cayman Islands Special Needs Foundation and the Crisis Center.
Sunday’s rout took the runners on a three mile journey through Thomas Russel Way, up to Smith Road and past the Chrissy Tomlinson on to Melmac Avenue and then up through South Church Street, before leading to back toward the Post Office to Elgin Avenue.
Cayman Islands Deputy Governor Franz Manderson was joined by His Excellency the Governor Mr. Martyn Roper at the start of the race, however, the Englishman would soon take the lead, ultimately finishing the race in surprisingly fast time.
“I like running and try to do a bit everyday,” noted the Mr. Roper. ….“I did have a bit of a head-start and there were lots of people faster than me today and I think many wanted to beat me just because I’m the governor,” he chuckled.
Mr. Roper also spoke about his delight at seeing so many people turnout to support the DG’s 5K.
“This is an amazing display of community support and it has been a great pleasure to spend time working with this group. I also enjoyed doing the race in Cayman Brac two weeks ago,” he said; referring to the DG’s 5K Brac segment of the race, which took place on 15th September.
With a bevy of prizes, including gift certificates, discount booklets and other goodies up for grabs, participants stuck around after the race - despite the light drizzle- to see whose names would be called.
The goal of this year’s event was to raise in the region of CI70,000 for the work of the respective foundations.
In his remarks, Deputy Governor Franz Manderson thanked everyone for being a part of this year’s event and reminded them that their support and participation is having a direct impact on the lives of others.
“This is your victory and you are making these things happen in our community. Your support makes all of the work these organizations do possible,” he remarked.
Usually, the DG’s 5K is held in April.
Organizers today, (September 29th) announced the race would be going back to being held in April, next year.
This year’s winner was Greeley Gayle of HSA.
