July 17th is Women’s Dive Day and so to use this day as a force for good, women (and men) across the Cayman Islands who love to dive can join in an annual charity fundraiser held by Divetech, situated at Lighthouse Point, with all proceeds raised going to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Led by Divetech’s Managing Partner, Joanna Mikutowicz, the event will see divers undertake a particularly exciting challenge in order to raise much-needed funds. This year the team of female divers at Divetech have challenged themselves and the other participants with hitting a certain number of hours diving underwater (or snorkelling) and they are also encouraging people from off island to participate as well, by calling in their donation and then sending them their dive/snorkel time which will be then added to the participants at Dive Tech’s numbers.
Joanna explained: “Every year, with the support of our friends, we here at Divetech celebrate the day with a charity fundraiser, of which 100 per cent of the proceeds on the day go directly to the cause. Our efforts this year will all go towards a charity close to oura hearts, the Cayman Islands Breast Cancer Foundation.”
She gave some background as to how they came up with the challenge.
“We read approximately 2.3 million people were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, so we made that 2.3 million seconds, which turns into 639 hours of dive or snorkel time that we need to accumulate throughout the day,” Joanna advised.
The event will also see a raffle for participants and potentially a silent auction as well, they anticipate.
People on-island can come and join in the event on Saturday, July 17th, 2021 and it promises to be a fun filled day of diving, snorkelling, raffle prizes and good company. Participants can sign up at www.divetech.com/wdd

Janette Fitzgerald, Chief Administrator with the Breast Cancer Foundation, said it has never been more important for people to support the cause.
“We have between two and five newly diagnosed women through our door each and every week and there has been no let up,” she advised. “Jo at Dive Tech has been raising funds for us since 2019 and we are very appreciative for them, bringing women together to raise money for women who need it, is truly the best.”
Janette advised that the funds raised at this event will go directly to their Wellness Program.
“No one is alone on their journey via breast cancer,” she said. “We do not receive any Government funding; all our vital services are free to those who need them. We have the only bra/prosthetic room in the Caribbean, we are fully stocked and carry all essentials needed for those having breast cancer surgery.”
