Doctors Hospital Multi-million Dollar New Cancer Centre Will Revolutionise Care in Cayman

Dr Sanjay Awasthi

A cutting-edge high-tech, multimillion, full-service oncology centre is coming to Grand Cayman within 18 months.

The almost 9000 square-foot standalone building will be built on the Doctors Hospital (DH) campus in George Town in partnership with a leading cancer provider in North America (unnamed at this time). The centre will ensure patients have access to the latest and most effective cancer treatment advances at a level of excellence unparalleled in the Caribbean and on par with the world’s best hospitals.

The strategic partnership represents a pivotal step in DH’s journey to provide advanced individualised cancer care in Cayman. The new centre will leverage the expertise of DH medical personnel and their North American partner’s existing world-renowned medical centres to offer a multidisciplinary approach for all types and forms of cancer. The centre will include medical oncology with six private infusion suites and a state-of-the-art cleanroom, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology with image-guided volumetric intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) / Halcyon Linear Accelerator. Taking a holistic approach to care, the centre will also feature a healing garden on its second floor - a place of refuge to promote healing and wellbeing in patients, families, and staff.

DH says the new oncology centre will provide comprehensive care and support for patients close to home – alleviating the need to travel abroad for an equivalent standard of care. The hospital has also invested in its staff. Dr Sanjay Awasthi, a renowned medical oncologist who has been practising for over 30 years, most recently served as the Cancer Center Director Division Chief of Haematology & Oncology at Texas Tech University. He now leads the oncology programme at DH, supported by a team of oncology nurses and a range of laboratory and diagnostics services at the forefront of innovation. Awasthi is also a tenured Professor of Oncology at several top medical schools and the globally recognised Beckman Research Institute and City of Hope NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles. Aswathi says, “Our leading clinical care and technology is driven by acclaimed oncologists, highly sub-specialised cancer experts, and surgeons, clinical researchers, and genomic scientists. But, DH knows there is no magic, one-size-fits-all approach to curing cancer, which is why we tailor our approach to the unique characteristics of each person – from diagnosis to treatment and beyond.”

“It is an honour to play an integral role in the evolution of care on the island, which will now continue with a revolutionary oncology service,” says DH board chairman Dr Yaron Rado. “Despite the added challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we took the opportunity to accelerate innovation. We added GE’s spectral 512 slice Revolution CT scanner this year, which delivers unrivalled care with less radiation while maximising patient comfort. We are also adding the GE SIGNA™ Voyager AIR™ Edition 1.5T, 70 cm MRI scanner early next year – with imaging capabilities on a level equal to the worlds world’s top research universities, significantly improving cancer diagnosis.”

As the only locally owned, private hospital serving Cayman for over 20 years, Doctors Hospital is dedicated to transforming healthcare in Cayman through modern medical, surgical, and diagnostic services. Dr Rado adds, “Although our mission to innovate and promote science and technology is global-facing, the hospital is dedicated to local service. The oncology centre is part of our community’s broader, multi-million dollar investment, proudly underwritten by the local bank, Butterfield. The centre will incentivise further foreign investment and relocation to Cayman, provide jobs for locals, and contribute to our economy over the next decade. It’s all about building a stronger, more resilient, and selfreliant Cayman.”
