The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Livingston Smith as the new Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Education (Provost), effective from January 2024. Dr. Smith brings over two decades of experience in teaching and academic administration to his new role.
Dr. Smith is an honors graduate of Church Teacher’s College, Jamaica, and has earned his BSc (Social Sciences) and MPhil (Government) degrees from the University of the West Indies. He was awarded the Jamaica Adult Suffrage Scholarship to pursue his Ph.D. in Government, which was a collaborative endeavor between the University of the West Indies and Florida International University. Dr. Smith, an advocate for continuous learning, has recently completed a Graduate Foundation in Law and a Master’s in Law (LLM) degree. He is also set to complete a master’s degree in theology from the Caribbean Graduate School of Theology this December.
In his tenure at UCCI, Dr. Smith has held various administrative positions including Department Chair, Acting Dean of Academic Affairs and Administration, Director of Research and Publication, and Director of Special Projects. He has also served as Vice-President/ Provost in the past, during which he established many beneficial connections for UCCI.
As an educator, Dr. Smith has taught courses in Political Science, History, Sociology, Ethics, and Research Methodology, contributing significantly to the academic environment at UCCI. His teaching philosophy emphasizes critical thinking and encourages students to explore their creative imagination. This approach is demonstrated by his initiative to form the UCCI Debate and Oratorical Society, which encourages students to engage in discussions on a variety of topical issues.
Dr. Smith’s academic contributions extend to institutions outside of UCCI. He has served as a Visiting Professor at Carleton University, Canada, and is involved in the UN Global Integrity Education Project and the United Nations Education for Justice (E4J) Webinar. He has also edited and authored several academic texts contributing to the discourse on Caribbean social and political issues.
In the community, Dr. Smith leads the Commitee for the Promotion of Research and Caymanian Scholarship (CPRCS) and directs the CXC Education Volunteer Programme. He was recently elected as the Vice President of the Caribbean Sociological Association (CASA) and has directed various academic conferences held at UCCI over the years.
Dr. Smith also dedicates time to local community service as the First Elder of the Savannah SDA Church and contributes columns to The Caymanian Times. He is married to Rockella Smith, and they have two sons, twelve-year-old Nathaniel and eight-year-old Theodore.
UCCI welcomes Dr. Smith to his new role and looks forward to the experience and knowledge he will bring to the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Education.
