EDITORIAL: Respect for all

Over the course of the past week, there has been debate in several quarters following Chief Justice Anthony Smellie’s decision to amend the Marriage Law to allow same-sex couples to be recognized in the Cayman Islands.

The decision sent ripples across the island, as far as the UK and among other former British colonies in the Caribbean, where same-sex marriage is not enshrined in law.

Almost as quickly as the decision came, so did the reactions – celebrations on one hand and outbursts and petitions calling for tradition to be upheld on the other. The flames were fanned on social media, in living rooms, bars and on the airwaves. The views on either side have been strong.

It is not the place of Caymanian Times to tell people what values they should have. However, we believe that it is important that all of us continue to show tolerance and respect to others, particularly when we hold different views.

This is not the only issue that divides us as a community. We often oppose each other hotly on topics of religion, politics, sports and others (including the port development). While this may be the case, it is important that we show maturity and respect each other’s values and views.

Bodden Town West MLA Chris Saunders, in a recent message to constituents, stated: “While this national discussion continues, I urge everyone to remember that whilst we may stand on different sides of an argument, we must remain united in seeking a solution that ensures a prosperous and harmonious Cayman for now and future generations.”

This is the sort of respect and maturity we are pleased to see coming from our leaders. We must remember that we are a society built on rules and laws bolstered by a justice system.

Through our differences and our discourse, one thing should remain at the fore: respect for all.
