EDITORIAL: Walking the walk and talking the talk

We’re blessed to be able to call these islands with a combined 102 square miles our home – permanently for some, others are just passing through.

There’s been much talk about environmental protection in recent years and movements started toward the reduction of single-use plastics. But on an average day, how much do we show our environment some love.

A recent Earth Day clean-up ended with a considerable amount of garbage collected from across Grand Cayman, in particular. One would think that with environmentalism arguably at an all-time high, that the need for such activities would be eliminated by now because of our love for Mother Earth.

Do those of us who loudly champion the need to protect the environment live this in our daily lives? Do we consider not dropping a piece of trash for someone else to collect or do we wait till we reach the nearest bin? Do we seek to reduce our daily waste, knowing that we have an almighty battle to keep the landfill in check or do we simply complain that government needs to find a solution?

The thing is, it is easy to get caught up in the political and emotional battles that use the tag line of protecting the environment, but we often overlook the simple steps we can take in our own lives to reduce the burden.

Our challenge to our readers is that if you are going to talk the talk, you better ensure that you walk the walk because actions always speak louder than words.
