Final Preparations Urged For Sister Islands

 

Final Storm Preparations Urged for Sister Islands

 Based on the current forecast track of Tropical Storm Rafael, the closest point of approach for Little Cayman will be 16 miles southwest and for Cayman Brac, 24 miles southwest. Forecasters expect that there will tropical storm force winds (between 39-73 miles per hour) with hurricane force gusts (74 miles per hour and greater). Winds should begin between 3-5pm today. Wave heights are expected to reach between 9 to 13 feet on Tuesday, 5 November in the Sister Islands. Heavy wave action and storm surges of up to 3 feet could increase the potential for coastal flooding.  

The storm was located 192 miles SE of Little Cayman and 184 SE of Cayman Brac, as of 7AM today. 

Expected concerns include damage to infrastructure, property and foliage. The community is also advised of potential damage to power line and water systems. Motorists are asked to exercise extreme caution and to avoid unnecessary travel during strong winds and impaired visibility due to rain.  

A marine warning is currently in effect for all three Islands and the public is urged to stay away from coastlines until an official All Clear has been issued. A shelter-in-place advisory has also been issued for the Sister Islands beginning at 12pm today, 5 November 2024.

Due to the adverse weather expected from Tropical Storm Rafael, the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac will be temporarily relocated to the Aston Rutty Medical Wing from 10:00 am on 5 November 2024.

Outpatient clinics, Dental & Pharmacy at Faith Hospital are closed Tuesday, 5th November 2024. 

Little Cayman Health Centre can be reached at 345-916-5395 in an emergency. 
 
Preparations on the Sister Islands began over the previous weekend following guidance from the National Hazard Management Executive. Agencies such as the Cayman Islands Regiment have also been deployed to stand by and assist in preparation for the storm.
