Finals set for exciting end to 2020 season

Sports 09 Dec, 2020 Follow News

Action from the 2020 CUC GPFL Under 11 regular season between Prospect Primary (purple) and George Town Primary

This past Saturday’s semifinals in the CUC Primary Football League (PFL) playoffs had everything one could expect from local youth football - exciting finishes, superb saves, great goals, amazing passes, tough tackles, great teamwork and of course, upsets.

Despite the torrential downpours that drenched the players and the pools of water that covered large areas of the playing surface at the Annex Field, the schools played on and competed for their place in CUC PFL history and a place in the final.

While the boys focussed exclusively on the Consolation and Champions Cup semifinal playoffs, the girls continued their regular season games in the 2020 CUC Girls’ Primary Football League (GPFL).

CUC GPFL Under 11 League:

With title contenders Cayman Prep Blue not scheduled to play their final game until next Saturday, it was up to the other schools to close the gap on the league leaders. The key game between Cayman International School (CIS) and Theoline L. McCoy Primary was not played due to the latter school’s scheduling mix-up. In other games, it was Sir John A. Cumber Primary 0 vs. Triple C 0, George Town Primary 0 vs. Prospect Primary 0 and Savannah Primary 3 vs. Cayman Prep Red 0.

CUC PFL Under 9 Consolation Cup:

George Town Primary secured their place in Saturday’s final with a hard-fought 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory over an always-improving South Sound School team. George Town Primary will meet Theoline L. McCoy Primary in the final as the representatives from Bodden Town surprised Cayman Prep 9B 1-0 thanks to an Arie Eden strike late in the game.

CUC PFL Under 9 Champions Cup:

2019 Under 9 defending champions Cayman Prep 9A defeated St. Ignatius Catholic School 4-1 to book their place in the final. The second semifinal between Savannah Primary and CIS will be played on Monday, December 7. The winner of this second semifinal will meet Cayman Prep 9A in the Under 9 final and the loser will play St. Ignatius Catholic in the third-place game.

CUC PFL Under 11 Consolation Cup:

Truth For Youth pulled off one of the upsets of the day as they surprised Prospect Primary 1-0 to book their spot in Saturday’s Under 11 Consolation Cup final. Truth For Youth will need to wait until Wednesday to find out if they face George Town Primary or Savannah Primary in the final as the second semifinal between George Town Primary and Savannah Primary was also postponed.

CUC PFL Under 11 Champions Cup:

Defending Under 11 champions Cayman Prep 11A defeated Red Bay Primary 5-1 to book a place in the prestigious final. Cayman Prep’s Oscar Gladstone-Brady grabbed a pair of goals and Tom Rees, Evan Gobin and Jaico Ebanks rounded off the scoring for the defending champions. Red Bay’s Basil Scott scored for Red Bay.

In the second semifinal, CIS’ Charlie Isbister had a ‘dream of a day’ in front of goal as he scored all four goals to lead his school past South Sound Schools 4-1 and a showdown with the defending champions Cayman Prep 11A. Jaden Harding scored for South Sound Schools.

In the third-place game, Red Bay Primary will face South Sound Schools.

The finals and third-place games in the 2020 CUC PFL Champions and Consolation Cup playoffs take place this Saturday, December 12 at the Annex Field.
