FOUR FROM CAYMAN IN QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE B’DAY HONOURS

Four persons from the Cayman Islands are included among the 1,134 honoured in Her Majesty The Queen’s 2022 Birthday Honours list.

The other recipients in the special Platinum Jubilee awards are spread across the mainland United Kingdom, the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies, and the rest of the Commonwealth.

Recognised for their outstanding contributions to Cayman are; Chief Justice Anthony Smellie QC, Cindy Scotland, Managing Director of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority(CIMA), Steven Barrett, former Director of Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service, and Jondo Obi, Director, of the Cayman Islands Red Cross.

In a statement announcing the awards, HE Governor Martyn Roper extended “warmest congratulations to all four worthy recipients of Birthday Honours.”

The individual citations released by the Governor’s Office are:

CHIEF JUSTICE ANTHONY SMELLIE

The Honourable Anthony SMELLIE QC our Chief Justice, receives a Knighthood (KCMG) for services to Law and Justice in the Cayman Islands and the Caribbean. He is recognised for his outstanding service to the Cayman Islands over the last four decades, including over twenty years as Chief Justice. The quality and impact of his legal judgments and his commitment to justice has made an exceptional contribution towards building the Cayman Island’s strong reputation for good governance as a highly respected legal jurisdiction, underpinning a major financial services centre of great importance to the local economy. His current service on the Court of Appeal of Bermuda and past service as Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions for Jamaica are also recognized.

CINDY SCOTLAND

Cindy Scotland, Managing Director of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority is awarded an OBE ‘For services to the Financial Services Industry in the Cayman Islands’. This is well-deserved recognition of Cindy Scotland’s successful career and tenure as a highly respected head of CIMA. The award is also testament to the strong reputation of Cayman Islands’ highly professional financial services industry and its commitment to meeting international standards and regulations.

STEVEN BARRETT

Steven Barrett, our recently departed Director of Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service is awarded an OBE ‘For services to prison establishments in Scotland, the Turks and Caicos and the Cayman Islands”. Steve Barrett is an outstanding public servant who has given many years of dedicated and loyal service in a number of challenging environments.

JONDO OBI

Jondo Helen OBI, Director, Cayman Islands Red Cross, is awarded a BEM ‘For services to the community in the Cayman Islands’. Jondo Obi is a highly respected and energetic Director of the Red Cross, which plays a significant and valued role in our community.
