Fun & Excitement at Layman Scott High School Sports Day

This much anticipated annual Cayman Brac event did not disappoint. Packed with excitement there was keen rivalry amongst the students from the three Houses- Hurricanes, Tradewinds and Northwester.

The weather was cool throughout the day except for a brief moment of rain, which did not dampen the spirits of everyone present. The event got underway just after 9 in the morning with prayer and singing of the National Anthem by year 9 student Antoniel MacDonald.

The day’s events then commenced. This year would see a number of novelty events introduced by the new P. E. Instructor Mr. Malcolm Ramlogan. The first of these was Musical chairs which drew loud cheering and at times strategies to the participants. Eventually, the students from Northwester prevailed.

Other such events which created stern competition was the Scottsman Strut (student’s forehead on a wooden pole that they had to spin around.

This was followed by Balloon Pop (students ran with the ballon between their legs and had to sit on it to burst it when they got to the finish line.)

Water Brigade (students lined up behind each other and had to pass a glass of water to those behind until the last person had filled up a bottle.

Flipper Flop (using flippers students had to run from and back to the starting line.) Bouncy Ball (sitting on a ball and bouncing along to other team mates .)

Tug-o-war drew the most excitement as participants pulled for all their might. Hurricanes prevailed convincingly in this event. There was no shortage of laughter, cheering and encouragement during these. In fact, parents and others had high praise for Mr. Ramlogan for introducing these. Former P.E. Instructor, Mr. Aaron Pollard was on hand to give assistance. The students were overwhelmed by his presence.

After these were completed, the traditional track and field events got underway. Here again the competition was stern and support ever vocal. By the midway mark Hurricanes was in the lead by some distance. The other teams had to play catch up in the second half.

Generating the greatest excitement were the 800m, 400m, the relays and without a shadow of doubt the standout event 100 meters dash for boys and girls in the stipulated age groups.

Tradewinds and Northwester did manage to do better in the second half but for all their efforts they were blown away by Hurricanes, the eventual champions.

A wonderful day of fun and stiff competition finally concluded around 3 p.m.
