George Town Revitalisation: Phase 3 of Central Business Development Enhancement Project Set to Begin Mid - September

The Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport, and Development (PAHITD) is pleased to announce the next phase of the Central Business Development Enhancement Project (CBDEP), a key effort within the larger George Town Revitalisation Initiative (GTRI). This project aims to breathe new life into the heart of George Town, making it a more vibrant and welcoming place for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Project Overview and Timeline

Phase 3 of the CBDEP is to begin middle of September and continue through the first week of December 2024. This phase includes significant improvements, such as new lighting installations, extensive upgrades to underground utilities, compaction and the laying of new pavers.

These enhancements are designed to make George Town more pedestrian-friendly and aesthetically pleasing, aligning with the broader vision of the GTRI to transform the capital into a dynamic and accessible urban center.

To streamline the process and minimize disruptions, the National Roads Authority Board (NRA) has shown strong support for combining Phases 3 and 4 of the project. This combined effort will also include the installation of new external light posts, further improving safety and the overall experience in downtown George Town.

Benefits and Enhancements

The George Town Revitalisation Initiative (GTRI) whilst, an extensive project requiring updating an aging infrastructure, it is not solely about the infrastructure; it’s about creating a city that reflects the unique cultural heritage of the Cayman Islands while embracing modern urban living. The CBDEP plays a crucial role in this by:

Boosting Local Businesses: The improvements are expected to increase foot traffic in the area, providing a boost to local shops and restaurants.

Enhancing Connectivity: By reimagining the central business district, the project will improve walkability and accessibility through new pedestrian pathways and better road links, making it easier for everyone to navigate the city.

Creating Vibrant Public Spaces: New green spaces and pocket parks will be introduced, offering residents and visitors places to relax and connect with nature in the middle of the city.

Preserving Heritage: The project will also focus on revitalizing historical sites, turning them into attractive landmarks that honor the island’s rich history while supporting a thriving urban culture.

Sustainability: Committed to a sustainable future, the project incorporates eco-friendly materials, LED lighting, and solar-powered infrastructure, ensuring that the revitalisation aligns with global environmental standards.

Significance of the Central Business Development Enhancement Project (CBDEP)

The CBDEP, as part of the GTRI, is a transformative initiative for George Town. The revitalisation efforts are designed to make the city a more attractive destination, not only for tourists but also for locals who live and work there. By blending the old with the new, the initiative aims to create a dynamic urban environment where the past and future coexist harmoniously.
