Voters in Gibraltar have backed a change in the law clearing the way for abortions.
A referendum on the issue this past Thursday, won by a two-thirds majority with 62 per cent in favour of the change and 36 per cent opposing it.
The changes would allow abortion up to the 12th week if the pregnant woman’s physical or mental health is deemed to be at risk, or if there is a substantial risk of a fatal foetal abnormality.
Predominantly Catholic Gibraltar has some of the most stringent abortion laws in the Western world with penalties of life imprisonment still on the books.
Women in the British overseas territory seeking to have an abortion need to travel to Britain or cross the border into Spain.
