Girls Softball – Game Report

Wednesday, May 25th
Coldwell Banker 9, Pizza Hut 4

Jialy Archbold-McLaughlin drove in two runs and pitched a complete game as Coldwell Banker clinched the regular season title with a hard-earned win over Pizza Hut last Wednesday.

The two teams were in a virtual deadlock in the standings entering the night, so the winner would emerge as champions. Pizza Hut had clobbered Coldwell Banker the week before, so Coldwell Banker was hoping to turn the tables.

Rio Windsor and Sofia Watler both walked and scored in the top of the 1st as Pizza Hut took the early lead. Coldwell Banker bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the 1st as McKenna Knapik reached on a fielder’s choice and she scored on Jialy’s double. Jialy sprinted home on the play as he ball eluded the left fielder and went to the fence. Mya Williams walked and she scored the third run of the inning on a sharp single by Lili Anne Aleria.

Coldwell Banker tallied six runs in the 2nd inning, aided by five walks. Keilah Gordon, Lorlie Bryan, Natalia Cugliari, Hanna Bodden, Demae Lee and McKenna all scored, with the final run coming on an RBI single by Mya.

Shay Windsor doubled and scored for Pizza Hut in the 3rd and sister Rio doubled and scored in the 5th, but that was all the offense they could muster as Jialy pitched a superb game, striking out ten batters while allowing just three hits and three walks.

Withney Jackson pitched really well in relief for Pizza Hut, allowing no runs and no hits over the final two innings of the game.

Saturday, May 28th
Pizza Hut 16, Digicel 14

The Girls Softball mini-tournament got underway on Saturday as Pizza Hut rallied from a 9-1 deficit to overcome Digicel, 16-14, in an exciting game with several changes in momentum.

Digicel came out fired up and ready to play, building up a 9-1 lead after two innings, thanks to on form pitching by Tracey Campbell, good defense, and an aggressive offense. Eight different Digicel players scored a run, with Eowyn Hawkins scoring twice. Maya Willis had a perfectly placed RBI bunt single in the 1st and Ariel Vasquez-Ritch had a sharp single to right field to open up the 2nd.

Pizza Hut fought back in a six run 3rd inning, with Coco Windsor and Withney Jackson both hitting 2 RBI singles. Digicel got a loan run in the bottom of the 3rd as Maya singled and used her speed to round the bases, eventually scoring on a fielder’s choice.

Pizza Hut’s Sofia Watler pitched beautifully in relief, allowing just one run over the 3rd and 4th innings, giving her team a chance to rally. Sisters Rio and Shay Windsor hit back-to-back doubles with two outs in the 4th, and both would score to make it 10-9.

In the top of the 5th, Pizza Hut tallied seven runs, with Shay scoring her fourth run of the game and Coco smacking her second 2 RBI hit of the night. The team also took advantage of four walks and a couple of throwing errors.

Digicel bravely battled back in the bottom of the 5th as Clara Ramos and Eowyn led off with singles and Maya hit an RBI single. All three of them would ultimately score, as did Renell Parchment, who walked. With the score 16-14, Shay made two very good plays at shortstop for the final two outs to preserve the win for Pizza Hut.

The teams continue their mini-tournament through June 8th. For further information on Cayman Islands Little League or the upcoming fundraising raffle, visit www.littleleague.ky, or check out the Facebook or Instagram pages.
