All-Star Skills Competition

On Wednesday, May 17th, Girls Softball held its first All-Stars Skills Competition. More than 20 girls attended for an evening of pitching, throwing, and hitting. The Homerun Competition was won by Kirk Freeport’s Kenia Rostran-Martin. She started slowly but came on strong in her final few swings, smacking several balls over the fence. Kirk Freeport’s Daniella Heard edged teammate Madison Malice to win the Hitting Consistency Competition. Both girls got 9 hits in 10 tries in the first round, and Daniella squeaked past Madison in the tiebreaker. Eowyn Hawkins from Coldwell Banker won the Pitching Accuracy Competition over seven other girls. The Kirk Freeport girls teamed up to win the Around the Horn Throwing Contest. That win, coupled with the hitting success, earned Kirk Freeport the medals for the top overall team of the night. Each of the individual winners received trophies. Everyone agreed that it was a fun evening, and the girls are already looking forward to next year.

Coaches/Parents vs. DC Girls Select Team

On Thursday night, it was time for the annual Coaches/Parents vs. DC Girls Select game. The girls won last year, so the adults came out determined to change the result, building up a quick 2-0 lead. The girls scored two in the bottom of the 2nd to tie the score. That seemed to inspire the adults even more, and the hit the ball all over the field, scoring six runs in the 3rd and another six in the 4th. Undaunted, the girls fought back with 9 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. The coaches/parents got the final out by tagging out the runner at home, to hold on for the 14-11 victory.
