As Tropical Storm Milton is expected to quickly strengthen into a major hurricane on its path towards Florida’s west coast, the Ministry of Education and Cayman Airways (CAL), have announced plans for students abroad in the state.
Premier and Minister for Education, Hon Juliana O’Connor-O’Connolly said, “when the National Hurricane Center warned of the increasing risks for parts of the Florida coast that could potentially feel "life-threatening impacts" of the powerful storm our first priority became our Caymanian students attending school in the area”.
Starting today, Sunday 6 October, all of our students will be contacted by the Scholarship Unit to ascertain whether they wish to leave or shelter in place. We want to ensure that students know they are being supported and they are aware of their options including coming home if they choose to do so,” she continued.
Cayman Airways has waived change fees for both their Tampa (TPA) and Miami (MIA) flights.
Minister for Tourism and Ports, Hon Kenneth Bryan, said “We’ve just witnessed the devastation of a powerful storm, Hurricane Helene, on the eastern United States. My heart remains with those who are still suffering in those states. I want to assure the community that my Ministry and CAL teams are working urgently and diligently to ensure that all Caymanians have an opportunity to be safely brought home.”
