Governor Roper Tours Department of Agriculture

His Excellency, the Governor, Mr Martyn Roper, toured the Department of Agriculture (DoA) for the first time on Friday, 27 September.

He was accompanied by Mr Wilbur Welcome, Deputy Chief Officer, Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture and Lands (EYSAL). Director of Agriculture Mr Adrian Estwick, guided the tour. Assistant Director Mr Brian Crichlow, Senior Veterinary Officer, Dr Larry Caven and Financial Administrator Mrs Veronica Mutuva were also present.

During the two-hour-long tour, Mr Roper visited the department’s Administrative offices, Laboratory, Abattoir, Plant Nursery, Animal Rescue Shelter, Sales Warehouse, Veterinary Clinic, Orchard, Compost section, and the recently completed Post Harvest Building.

Upon arrival at each section, Mr Estwick introduced him to the members of staff. Section heads along with employees then provided him with an overview of the work that takes place in each section as well as information about ongoing projects.

“I am impressed at the comprehensive work that takes place here at the Department of Agriculture and the commitment and passion of the staff to their work. Agriculture is a crucial part of our livelihood in the Cayman Islands, and the department plays an important role in providing local farmers with the tools which will enable them to feed the nation,” Governor Roper stated.

At the end of the tour, Mr Estwick presented His Excellency Mr. Martyn Roper with a basket of local agricultural produce.

“I am glad that we had the opportunity to provide Governor Roper with an understanding of some of what we do here at the Department of Agriculture,” Mr Estwick said.
