Throughout the month of March, we celebrate the incredible successes and unwavering determination of women across our islands and beyond. At the Department of Sports, we are proud to place even greater emphasis during this time on inspiring, educating, and empowering women and girls — showcasing the profound impact that sports and physical activity can have on their lives.

Recognizing the achievements of women and girls is vital. Equally important is ensuring we continue to break down barriers and support initiatives that foster greater participation in sports and physical wellness for all. This month, we are reminded that #AcceleratingAction means actively creating opportunities, amplifying voices, and driving progress toward gender equality. It holds institution accountable urging them to deliver on their commitments, with greater speed and efficiency. It calls for urgency and transformative change.

The resilience and strength shown by women and girls, especially in the years following COVID -19, cannot be overstated. Many faced immense pressures, self-doubt, and uncertainty yet they continue to push forward. Some found their footing more easily than others, but every experience matter, and every story is important. We honor them all.

In the coming weeks, we will highlight voices from across our community — leaders, athletes, coaches, and supporters — who are driving sports forward, both recreationally and competitively. We hope these stories will inspire others to step up, get involved, and #AccelerateAction in their own way.

As the global theme reminds us, International Women’s Day is not limited to any one country, group, or organization — it belongs to everyone, everywhere.

Former National Athlete and Acting Assistant Director of Sports, Lavern Ebanks had this to say: “This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the resilience, courage, and accomplishments of women everywhere. Women have led change in traditionally male-dominated fields, spearheaded social justice movements, and broken barriers with determination and strength. As we mark this important occasion, let us renew our commitment to empowering women, amplifying their voices, and creating a more inclusive, equitable future for all. By celebrating past achievements and embracing present challenges, we can work together toward a world where every woman has the opportunity to thrive.”

National Squash Athlete and Assistant Coach at Department of Sports, Jade Pitcairn had this to say: This International Women’s Day 2025, we honor the brilliance, resilience, and unstoppable spirit of women everywhere! #AccelerateAction is more than a theme—it’s a movement to drive faster progress, break barriers, and create a world where every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive. Women are leading, innovating, and shaping the future in every field, and today, we celebrate their achievements, amplify their voices, and commit to pushing forward with even greater strength. Together, let’s turn momentum into lasting change.

A Collective Call to Action: We extend heartfelt thanks to the women and girls who have dedicated their time, energy, and talents to advancing sports and wellness in our islands. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. However, the journey is far from over. To #AccelerateAction, we must ensure that women and girls have access to the resources, support, and opportunities they need to achieve even more — and in doing so, inspire others to follow.

We also thank the many residents and stakeholders who continue to champion gender inclusion and equality. We encourage you to keep inviting others to join you — whether it’s on the field, at the gym, or in your community initiatives — because collective action drives real change. Let’s #AccelerateAction together.

As one powerful quote reminds us: “A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality should be a given.”

The responsibility is ours — every day in every action we take. When we witness inequality, we must speak up and take action. Every time.

Building a Brighter Future: Together, we can build a Cayman Islands where women and men, girls and boys, all have equal opportunities — not just in sports, but in every aspect of life. This vision requires commitment, unity, and the collective will of our entire community. When women thrive, our families, communities, and society as a whole reap the benefits.

This March, let us Accelerate Action — for gender equality, for inclusion, and for a brighter, more equitable future for all.
