Hurricane Alert Issued: Stay Vigilant, Be Prepared

On advice of the Director General of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service and the Director of Hazard Management Cayman Islands, the Acting Deputy Governor, Mr. Eric Bush, Acting Chairman of the National Hazard Management Council has placed the Cayman Islands under a Hurricane Alert as of 8:00 pm tonight.

The alert signifies that a hurricane poses a potential threat within the next 48-72 hours. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, stay informed through official government channels, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The National Hurricane Centre based in Miami has advised that Hurricane Beryl is expected to remain an extremely dangerous Category 4 when it reaches the Windward Islands later tonight or Monday morning.

I urge everyone to take the necessary steps and to get ready for what may be the first hurricane of the season to impact our Cayman Islands. What to Expect During a Hurricane Alert

During a Hurricane Alert, it is crucial for residents to stay informed, vigilant, and prepared. HMCI, in collaboration with the National Weather Service (CINWS), are closely monitoring the hurricane's trajectory and will provide updates as the situation evolves. The alert period is a critical time for residents to finalize their preparedness plans, secure their properties, and ensure they have the necessary supplies.

Do Not Panic

"As Hurricane Beryl makes its way through the Eastern Caribbean, the safety and well-being of our residents are paramount. We are actively monitoring the situation and taking all necessary precautions to protect our communities. I strongly encourage everyone to stay informed and adhere to the safety guidelines provided by our emergency services.” shared Hon. Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly. In response to the developing storm, Caucus met today “to further coordinate our efforts and ensure a comprehensive response is in place. Your vigilance and preparedness are essential as we navigate this challenge together."

The National Hazard Management Executive will meet on Monday morning, 1 July to review the status of preparedness efforts on all three islands. An update will be shared with the public following the meeting on recommendations for getting ready, public safety measures and next steps.

Key Preparedness Tips

Stay Informed: Regularly check official government channels, such as the National Weather Service, HMCI, CIG and local news outlets for the latest updates and instructions.

Emergency Kit: Assemble an emergency kit that includes water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, batteries, flashlights, and other essential items.

Secure Property: Bring outdoor furniture, decorations, and garbage cans inside. Secure windows and doors with shutters or plywood.  

Evacuation Plan: Familiarise yourself with local evacuation routes and have a plan in place for where you will go if an evacuation order is issued.

Communicate: Stay in contact with family and friends. Let them know your plans and ensure everyone in your household is aware of the emergency plan.

Fuel and Power: Ensure your vehicles are fully fuelled and that you have backup power sources, such as generators, if possible.

HMCI in partnership with government leaders and emergency services are taking comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and recovery of all residents. Emergency response teams are on standby, shelters are being prepared, and resources are being allocated to manage potential impacts. Coordination with local utilities and service providers is ongoing to minimize disruption and expedite recovery efforts post-storm.
