Increase in Theft of Construction Equipment

Since the beginning of the year, the RCIPS has noted an increase in incidents of theft and burglary of construction tools and equipment.

During these incidents, items have been taken from construction sites, vehicles, and private residences, and are suspected to then be sold by the culprits directly to other entities or individuals involved in construction.

As such, the RCIPS is advising persons involved in construction work of precautions they can take against such thefts:

Consider implementing increased lighting on job sites, and potentially hiring on-site security.

Keep track of who attends the site during the day, and make note of any suspicious or unauthorised persons.

Containers, structures, or vehicles, where tools and equipment are stored, should be locked and secured overnight, or whenever left unattended.

Equipment should not be left out in the open if possible.

Additionally, it is best to record serial numbers of equipment and to mark items, so that they can be identified more easily if a theft does occur.

Persons working in these businesses are also encouraged to report any instances of unusual attempts to sell them tools or equipment, as these goods may have been stolen.
