Jasmine Runners Lace Up for Marathon to Secure an incredible $34,026 for a New Vehicle

On Saturday, December 3rd, 15 dedicated runners took to the streets supporting Jasmine Palliative and Hospice Care at the Cayman Islands Marathon, raising an impressive $34,026.

The funds raised by the dedicated runners will help Jasmine purchase a new vehicle for their nursing team, which will help significantly to improve patient care delivery, ensuring timely responses to urgent calls, safe transport of equipment and supplies, and enhanced mobility, especially during inclement weather.

Expressing the urgent need for a new vehicle, Jasmine’s Palliative Care Physician, Dr. Sharpe, emphasized, “Our clinical team’s ability to navigate the island is crucial, given that most of our care is provided in our patient’s homes. With our current vehicle being 12 years old and increasingly unreliable, securing a new method of transport is imperative to maintaining the high standard of care we strive for.”

Jasmine Palliative and Hospice Care is the sole provider of dedicated palliative and hospice care services in the Cayman Islands. They currently support an average of 60 patients a month who have been diagnosed with a serious illness, and all their services are free of charge. The majority of Jasmine’s patients receive care in their own homes, so a functional vehicle is essential to ensure efficient patient outreach.

One of Jasmine’s passionate runners, Lauren Hill, ran in memory of her mother, Alison Hill, who received support from Jasmine last year. Lauren shared, “Jasmine did an awesome job of taking care of my mother while she was at the Jasmine Villa. Our team wanted to help raise money so that Jasmine can continue to provide great care.” Alongside Milly Serpell and John Wolf, Lauren raised $14,116.10 in Alison’s memory. John added, “We all take our bodies for granted every day, and unfortunately, some of us end up needing care.  Jasmine has provided excellent care to two people I have known in the past, and I wanted to help them continue doing that.”

Another runner, Daisy Morris, ran to raise funds in memory of her friend Liesl Richter, who passed away this year. Daisy shared, “I ran for my great friend Liesl, who passed away at the end of October. Jasmine allowed her to stay home with her family in her final moments, making her as comfortable as possible. Learning more about the charity, I felt I had to raise money for them in Liesl’s honour so that more people may be able to have the level of care they offer. Liesl was a phenomenal woman who is missed terribly by so many. I will be back to run for her again.” Daisy raised $10,933.82 in memory of Liesl.

In addition to Daisy, Sam Story assembled a KPMG Relay Team that ran in memory of Liesl. Joining Sam were Jack MacKenzie, Paul McKechnie, and David Conen. Sam shared, “After a valiant 4-year battle with lung cancer, Liesl sadly passed away a few weeks ago, at just 36 years old. She was incredibly smart, driven, and quick-witted. For a small person, she had a very large presence. She became a Partner at Appleby at a young age, accumulating a number of global firsts and records for the firm. Jasmine managed Liesl’s end-of-life care, allowing her to pass at home, surrounded by her friends and family, and in as little pain as possible.”
