‘Joey’ Hew Wins Another Term in GT North

Incumbent Joseph ‘Joey’ Hey managed to hold on to his seat in George Town North after a highly contested campaign against contender Johann Moxam.

Results were slow to come in from the polling station at the George Town Primary School. However, as the evening unfolded it soon became clear that the Minister of Commerce Planning and Infrastructure would remain a parliamentarian for the next four years.

The Caymanian Times spoke exclusively with Mr. Hew on the heels of his win at the MP’s Office on North Sound Road.

The Minister called the win, ‘a relief’ and explained that the 2021 election was different than any other he had been a part of.

“Social media and the emergence of different forms of press made it difficult to sift through the facts and coming off the pandemic, this election felt like one crisis following another,” he explained, adding that the contest became somewhat personal as well.

“I am glad to have the country’s support and in the midst of all the confusion that is what is important; to ultimately have the opportunity to represent your people.”

Mr. Hew noted that he was still not sure about the Progressive’s chances at forming a government but wa optimistic and noted that he intended to serve the Constituency of George Town North to best of his ability for the next four years.

“I still haven’t had a chance to take in all the results, as I have been visiting with my supporters in the various areas, though it’s been an interesting evening across the board so far.” he said.

When asked if he had any words for his opponent in the election, Mr. Hew noted that he wanted to say that, “Representation requires one to be personable and you have to know to tone. We are all Caymanians at the end of the day and what is best for Caymanians is what we should always bare in mind.

“If your intentions are pure, it will show and that is ultimately what the people are looking for in a representative,” he remarked.

Mr Hew is a past President of the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce, and headed the Cayman Islands Restaurant Association for five years until it’s amalgamation into the Cayman Islands Tourism Association, where he continued to serve as a Director. In addition he has been Deputy Chairman of the Trade and Business Licensing Board, as well as the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands.
