It was a great time to enjoy themar caaderie of teammates from school, try to beat some records (maybe even qualify for CARIFTA) and make friends outside your school circle too. Oh and have quite a lot of fun, whether taking part or cheering for your school. The day began in fine style, with the singing of the National Song (actually in wonderful three-part harmony) and reciting the Athlete’s Pledge.

John Gray retained the Inter Secondary sports title against 12 other private and government schools, and one homeschooler. Second came Clifton Hunter, and Third, Cayman International School. The other schools in the two-day event, between 11 and 12 March at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex included Cayman Academy, Cayman International School, Cayman Prep & High School, Cayman Islands Further Education Centre, Dual Enrollment –UCCI, Grace Christian Academy, Layman E. Scott High School, Lighthouse School, St. Ignatius Catholic School, Triple C School, and the UCCI.

On Thursday 11 March track events included the 400m finals for boys and girls, 1500m for boys and girls, and the 100m for boys and girls. Levi Superville won the Boys’ 3000 in a very exciting finish, with Juan Pablo coming second, and James Crooks third. Events also included the Under-16 boys long jump, as well as shot put, javelin, discus and long-jump events. There were lots of medal presentations towards the end of the morning and afternoon, too. The events on Friday finished off with the 4x100 relays, which are always exciting.

Martine McKenzie won the 400m hurdles and Delora Johnson won the Long Jump and the High Jump. Aaliyannah Anderson excelled by winning the 100m, 200m. Devonte Howell won the 100m, 200m, 400m, and Stephen Watson won the High Jump and the Long Jump.

Minister the Hon Tara Rivers said “I’m just so happy to be here on behalf of the government for the inter-secondary schools sports day, a staple of our academic calendar and its really great to see both public and private schools and even home school children are out here in a healthy, competitive environment and fostering friendships across school lines as well.”

John Gray Principal Jonathan Clark said, “I feel grateful and thankful for us being able to compete at the inter secondary championships, we couldn’t do this last year because of the covid lockdown, so I think we should all be thankful for the steps that have been taken to protect everybody and I think the athletes should appreciate the opportunity they’ve got today, where other athletes cant do this in other areas of the world. Obviously I want John Gray High School to win, but I want our athletes to compete in a respectful and winning mentality as well. Good luck to everybody.”
