A shocking video of a violent altercation between students at John Gray High School has emerged this week, having taken place on Wednesday 13 September. The incident has been condemned by the Department of Educational Services.
The fight, graphically streamed on social media, appears to have been an assault on one male student by two other male students. They are seen punching the student while he tries to defend himself and, at one point, one of the two students making the assault is seen to be stomping on the victim’s neck. Other male students are seen watching the fight and doing nothing to stop it.
DES Director Mark Ray said they were taking swift action in response to what he termed “this unfortunate incident".
Mr Ray said: "Upon receiving reports of the incident, school staff acted quickly to ensure the victim received medical attention. We extend our heartfelt support to the victim and his family and are committed to working with the school to provide counselling support to help him through this difficult ordeal."
Staff also called the police School Resource Officer, who apprehended and took the attackers into custody.
"In the interest of maintaining a safe and nurturing learning environment for all children, the school has decided to temporarily exclude the assailants from the school. Such conduct is unacceptable in our educational institutions, and we hope this action sends a clear message that violent behaviour will not be tolerated in our schools," he confirmed.
The DES Director encouraged all students to report incidences of bullying to a trusted adult.
"Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, and we are committed to taking all necessary measures to address and prevent such incidents in the future," he said.
Mr Ray urged parents to have open and honest conversations with their children about the importance of treating others with kindness and respect.
