With a campaign slogan of ‘A New Direction for West Bay West’, former banker Julie Hunter has launched her candidacy for next year’s general election.
She will be challenging veteran MP McKeeva Bush who has represented the area since 1984.
No party affiliation has been declared leading to speculation that she is running as an independent.
In a statement launching her bid for the seat, Julie Hunter listed rebuilding the middle class, community infrastructure, and sustainable development as her priorities.
“I have shared the challenges of our community and hear the cries of our young people,” she said. “We are at a crossroads. If we do not act now, I fear it will be too late. I am ready to dedicate my skills, faith, and lifelong service to leading our islands toward a brighter future.”
Saying that her candidacy is to drive positive change for West Bay Grand Cayman, Hunter stated that she is “not running to be a career politician, but to enact meaningful change that reflects the values and wishes of the Caymanian people.”
Her profile statement presents her as “a respected community leader, accomplished professional, and advocate for positive change.”
The campaign priorities as outlined indicate:
- Rebuilding the Middle Class: Advocating for job creation and affordable housing opportunities to help young Caymanians thrive at home.
- Community Infrastructure: Driving long-overdue projects like the Civic Center, Police Station, and repair of Morgan’s Harbor dock.
- Sustainable Development: Addressing the challenges of unplanned growth to preserve the Cayman Islands’ unique identity and quality of life.
Listed among her credentials are; a career in banking spanning 35 years, a Canadian banker’s degree, and a former Vice President at Cayman National Bank who led the opening the Centennial Branch in 2003. She is also a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and a Justice of the Peace.
According to Hunter’s launch statement, “For more than 17 years, Julie has also led the Circle of Love Ministries, an organization devoted to uplifting the community through encouragement, empowerment, and meaningful impact. Under her leadership, Circle of Love has become a beacon of hope for countless individuals, supporting children, seniors, and families in need through impactful programs and initiatives.”
It adds: “Born and raised in Northwest Point, West Bay, Julie Hunter has dedicated her life to serving her community. From the age of 13, Julie has been a tireless champion for volunteerism and service. Her lifelong contributions earned her recognition at the 2023 National Hero Day awards celebration, for her outstanding achievements in Volunteerism and Charitable services.”
