The distressing international news we see every day shows what happens when people don’t treat each other with kindness and compassion. In contrast to the turbulence abroad, the Cayman Islands is a haven of calm and harmony, where neighbours help neighbours and even complete strangers offer support to those in need. Caymankind is not just a marketing slogan for (absent) tourists. Now more than ever, it falls on each of us to do whatever we can to help our community come through these difficult times. Kindness is not doing something for someone else because they can’t, but because you can.
As a relatively small financial services and law firm business (employing 8 people including 3 attorneys) everyone at the Sinclair Group recognises how blessed and fortunate we are to have continued working without any interruption throughout the pandemic lock down - in fact we have been busier than ever. This has allowed us to increase our sponsorship of Meals on Wheels’ Pledge a Senior Programme, donate financial support and a car to Cayman’s ARK to facilitate their amazing work distributing food and supplies throughout Grand Cayman to those in desperate need, and continue our ongoing sponsorship of Cayman Arts Festival’s music education programme for local children.
When Community Psychiatric Nurse Dympna Carten of the Government’s NEOC – Human Concerns Cluster brought to our attention that there are elderly people and individuals with chronic mental health conditions in the Cayman Islands whose living circumstances are so stretched that they do not even have the “luxury” of a radio, let alone a TV or internet to keep them informed, connected and entertained in the midst of a global pandemic and now, hurricane season, we knew we had to help. We are proud and delighted to become the first corporate sponsor of Dympna’s initiative to provide battery-operated and/ or solar-powered radios to the most deserving and needy recipients who can feel so isolated a times. Dympna is co-ordinating with the Government’s Department of Children and Family Services to make sure these radios go to the right homes, and we are sure they will make a big difference in the lives of those receiving them.
A modest donation of CI$25 is all it would take to provide a radio and spare batteries to a disconnected family, please be kind just because you can.
