Law School Hosts, ‘All that Jazz’

The Student Society of the Truman Bodden Law School hosted their annual fundraiser on 26th June at the Marriott Hotel.

The evening - titled, “All that Jazz” featured a cross section of the Islands’ business community, along with past and present students of the institution.

Remarks came from Cayman Islands Premier Wayne Panton, who is also an alumnus of the institution, as well as other guest speakers.

Over 260 persons packed the hotel’s ballroom for the black tie event.

“We are delighted that the students society of the Law School organised this event with the local business community to raise funds for several important causes,” noted Deputy Director of the Law School, Mr. Scott Atkins.

President of the Student Society Julie Campbell noted that the every year the school hosts a gala to raise funds for the moot competition, which is usually held in Vienna. However with Coronavirus casting a shadow on travel this year, it meant that the funds would instead go toward the organisation’s very first scholarship for a young Caymanian to attend the Law School, as well as the Alex Panton Foundation; a Non-Profit Organisation with the primary objective of raising awareness for mental illnesses affecting children and young adults.

Alumnus, Counsel Member and renowned Defence Attorney Richard Barton, whose firm sponsored a table at the event noted, “We support the social and core components of the Law School and applaud the healthy representation of the business community at tonight’s gala.

“As a former student, there is certainly a degree of nostalgia and pride, juxtaposed with a new appreciation from an industry perspective; a sort of looking back at one’s self from the other side of things.”

The theme of the event was ‘Inspiration and Empowerment’.

One of the highlights of the evening was the address by Cayman Islands Premier Wayne Panton, who was joined by his wife Jane.

The Alex Panton Foundation is the namesake of their son.

Both expressed their appreciation at the Law School’s gesture of kindness and contribution to the Foundation, which has been working in the Cayman Islands since Alex’s passing, to assist young persons struggling with mental health issues.
