‘Lest We Forget’ Remembrance Day 2024

By: Hayley Reid

On Sunday, 10 November 2024, Remembrance Sunday ceremonies were held at the Cenotaph at Elmslie Memorial United Church in Grand Cayman and the Cenotaph on the District Administration Lawn in Cayman Brac to honour the courage, service, and sacrifices of those who served in the armed forces.

Government officials, veterans, members of the uniformed services, and the public gathered in solemn reflection and gratitude for the bravery of service members who fought to secure freedom and peace.

Both ceremonies featured a heartfelt religious service and a symbolic laying of wreaths. The ceremony in Grand Cayman featured a parade by a mixed contingent of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, Cayman Islands Regiment, Fire Service, His Majesty’s Prison Service, Coast Guard, and other local uniformed services, including the Girls’ Brigade, Scout and Cub Scouts, Cadet Corps, and the Cayman Islands Mass Band. The royal salute to the Acting Governor, Mr. Franz Manderson by these detachments was a tribute to the enduring spirit and valour of Cayman’s service members.

Many attendees wore the poppy, a symbol of remembrance and hope for peace, demonstrating their respect for the sacrifices made by veterans both locally and internationally. Both ceremonies ended with a moving commitment to ensuring that the legacy of those who served continues to be honoured in future generations.

Reflecting on the significance of the day, President of the Cayman Islands Veterans Association Andrew McLaughlin said, “Remembrance Sunday is a powerful reminder of the bravery and selflessness of our veterans. We are proud to gather as a community to show our deep respect and gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom, and those who continue to fight to preserve our freedoms.”

Premier, Honourable Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, also spoke about the importance of remembering the sacrifices made for peace: “This day is a moment for all of us to reflect on the cost of war and to renew our commitment to peace and unity. We owe an immense debt to our veterans, and we pledge to always honour their service and sacrifice.”
