LIAT, the Eastern Caribbean’s veteran airline, is back in a new form, this time as LIAT 2020 (Antigua).
Having gone into administration four years ago in millions of dollars of debt LIAT 2020 has bounced back. It made its inaugural flight on August 6 with an E145 operated by majority shareholder Air Peace, a Nigerian airline.
The maiden flight between Antigua and St Lucia Vigie. LIAT 2020 is a joint venture between the Antigua & Barbuda government and the Nigerian carrier, which is reportedly investing over $80 million, including the provision of three Embraer E145 jets to support the airline’s operations.
Speaking at the launch, Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, announced that the partnership with Air Peace will equip LIAT 2020 with at least seven aircraft, with plans for future expansion as travel demand grows.
